Confirmed 8/1/07 on a fresh install on Feisty (7.04) server. VMWare Server 1.0.3 will not allow a remote login until the change to vmware-auth above is implemented

change /etc/pam.d/vmware-auth to read as follows:

auth required pam_unix_auth.so shadow nullok
account required pam_unix_acct.so
